On my best days, I’m selfless enough to get out of the way and allow the universe to work it’s magic.

There were always rumors when I was growing up about how the song Stairway to Heaven was written. Jimmy Page described something moving his pen and words just appearing. This song that changed the world was written by him and Robert Plant with seemingly very little effort.

This phenomenon happens when artists allow creativity to flow through them.

Maybe the best examples of this are child prodigies like Alexandra Nechita. She started being compared to Picasso at the age of 9. When you watch her paint and hear her describe the process it’s the same… It’s almost as if it’s not about her at all but rather her ability to surrender to a greater creative force from within.

Anyone with the mental capacity can learn the technical aspects of art/photography. But there’s much more. The aspect that can only be experienced and not taught in a book. This experience, I suspect, is different but the same for most of the artists, writers that I respect.

- inspiration
- a connection to the subject on a spiritual level
- the willingness to let go of expectations and let the universe work its magic

The last is most important for me. When I breathe and let go, it just seems to flow without effort.

I came across an interesting video via my subscription to the Horse Think Blog about distorted body image due to models being retouched to death in Photoshop. It’s becoming such an issue that there are countries like France that are trying to pass laws against it or require disclaimers.

Obviously, as someone with a pinup photography business, I do a lot of retouching to make women look better than they normally look. On the flip side I have a 12 year old daughter and see what it’s like for girls to try to live up to that image. I’d love to see us as a society move away from this unreal image of women. It’s healthier and in my opinion honesty IS beautiful.

What do you think?

Nothing makes me happier than creating amazing images. Hearing from a client about how excited they are about the pictures we took is what its all about for me. So… I’ll make a deal with you… we’ll do our part if you’ll help out a little. Here’s a few tips:

  • If we have scheduled a makeup artist for you it’s best to come to the shoot without makeup on. A completely clean face is best for the makeup artist to start with
  • Bring the best you possible to the shoot. Sleep well and take care of yourself the night before. A lot of things can be retouched but there is little that can be done about a hang over.
  • Bring more wardrobe than you think you will need. I can’t tell you how many times a client has said ” I wish I would have brought X with me”. I would recommend bringing a suitcase if we are shooting multiple hours.
  • We have a lot of props at our studio but if you have anything you think will work for the shoot, bring it for sure. The right props can really bring an image to the next level. We can also talk about props in our initial consultation. We can purchase any specialty props for you prior to your shoot.
  • Research what you want to capture. It really helps to have a firm understanding of the types of images we want to capture prior to the shoot. We will always think of other scenarios on the day of the shoot but it’s good to have a rough idea at least. If you can find pictures that are similar to what you want to capture then share them with me. It really helps to ensure that we will get exactly what you want and it will help me gauge the amount of time needed to pull it off as well as props and wardrobe you will need to bring.

If you have any questions, contact me and I’ll answer them.
