Happy Birthday Johnny! (26 February 1932 – 12 September 2003)

Johnny Cash is one of my personal heroes. He was authentic and truly didn’t care what the establishment thought about what he did. He always looked out for the underdog because more than a few times in his life, he was one. He recognized drugs and alcohol were killing him and he did something about it.  He came out against the Vietnam war when it wasn’t popular for a country singer to do so.

He was one of the greats both on and off stage so here’s to you Johnny! RIP brother.

So… there’s this self portrait contest right? I say to myself, “self, you need to enter that contest.” After all, the grand prize is 6 months accommodations in NY or $7007. Not a bad deal at all.

I had to come up with something unique, funny and slightly demented, cause that’s just what I do. Oh and sufficiently self deprecating. AND it had to relate to what I do.

Special thanks to Suzanne Tran for her creative input and all around help pulling this off.

I mentioned that I was redesigning the portfolios on http://brentwalkerphoto.com again and a good friend called me “flighty”. Well… that’s probably not untrue but I had very good reasons for my flightiness. The horizontal scrolling was cool and I liked viewing the images for some of the galleries with images inline, almost like viewing them in a gallery. The problem with the horizontal scroll was inconsistency in different browsers and the gallery experience didn’t really work for all of my portfolios. Plus I was very restricted as far as the vertical size limitations of the images.

So, after much reworking I have a new slicker design that allows much more flexibility with how I present my work. All of the portfolios have new images and are worth checking out again in my humble opinion. I’ll  be posting some of the new images on here for the next few weeks.

The first series is called Broken. It’s about the destructive path of addiction:

The Name Change
Some of you have been following the Lucky’s Bordello series that I’ve been working on. I changed the name (at about 2 AM this morning) from Lucky’s Bordello to Storyville. I won’t get into great detail as to why, but it’s mostly because the Bordello name had been used for a series by a pretty well known photographer and I want this project to stand alone.

Why Storyville?
I’ve been giving some pretty deep thought to a new name for some time. During my research, I came across Storyville.

Storyville was the red-light district of New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1897 through 1917. The District, as it was known, was set aside in hopes of keeping prostitution in one confined area of the city. It was decidedly French influenced, as was all of Louisiana, but had a very diverse culture. The district was situated two blocks inland from the French Quarter. Storyville was a mix of high end bordellos like Mahogany Hall to seedy ally ways. There was even a special book published, simply called “The Blue Book”, to help gentlemen searching for some companionship.

By Photographer E. J. Bellocq

There’s a lot more and it’s a compelling story that I may be telling pieces of along the way. There is a site dedicated to Storyville if you want to read more.

So, all in all its perfectly matched with the vision that I have for this project. I’m planning a trip there very soon and am  really excited about the new name and slightly new direction.

If you haven’t checked out the series, do it! I just added two new sets called “Voyeur” and “Puissance”.

Enjoy!

I’ve been looking forward to seeing how the video came out that was filmed during our shoot with Kris Melton from www.RockFistReviews.com. I was pleased for sure. Tim Daust from ReelMind Studios did a hell of a job putting this together.

Look for big things coming from Kris in the future. She has the talent, drive and intelligence to make a mark on an industry that could use a good swift kick in the ass.

A few things have changed here. Obviously I have a new look to the site and new functionality. Oh… and a new name. Changed from the Naked Gypsy to Lucky’s Blog. I like it better. The Naked Gypsy’s ship has sailed. I’m also going to be putting a little more focus on the pinup work. I know its what people want to see more of and well its my business so, there ya have it.

If you receive this in your inbox, you probably got nailed with a huge email of many many posts at once. Sorry about that. I guess its because I switched from Blogger to Worpress. Hopefully it won’t happen again!

Pictures from the Holiday shoot are coming soon. Thanks to everyone who came out for it and the crew who pulled it off flawlessly!
